China is a major importer of aquatic products. According to Chinese customs statistics, in the first quarter of 2022, China imported a total of 910,000 tons of edible aquatic products, an increase of 39.6% compared to 2021. The cumulative import value was 25.835 billion Chinese Yuan, a year-on-year increase of 44.6%.
It can be said that imported aquatic products are indispensable food for Chinese people.
Customs declaration process for imported aquatic products in China
+ Application: The exporting country submits a written application to China’s General Administration of Customs for exporting aquatic products to China. China’s General Administration of Customs will start the access procedure and provide a risk assessment questionnaire to the intended exporting country.
+ Organization assessment: China’s General Administration of Customs organizes an expert group to conduct a risk assessment on the official answer sheet and on the relevant technical information provided by the intended exporting country
+ Consultation on quarantine requirements: According to the evaluation results, shipper and consignee will conduct consultations on the inspection and quarantine health requirements of aquatic products exported to China, confirm the content and format of veterinary health certificates for products exported to China.
+ Enterprise registration: Shippers shall register with China’s General Administration of Customs as required.
+ Filing: The consignee/importer should file with the customs at the place of their registration. For aquatic products that need to be approved for entry animal and plant quarantine, they must also obtain the “People’s Republic of China Entry Animal and Plant Quarantine License”. After the product arrives in China, it will be assessed by the Chinese Customs.
