Containers deposit this amount the importer needs to pay the carrier, and this will be refunded back when all the procedure is completed. This policy ensures the carrier will not lose in case of a damaged container or it is missing.
Container deposit
The process can be summarized as follow:
+ Importer pay the deposit to carrier and do other procedure to pickup container
+ Unload the goods and return the empty container to the container yard
+ Provide the document to the carrier, they’ll evaluate the damage to the container and refund the amount paid typically within 2 weeks.
So how much is the deposit fee? It depends on carrier policy regarding how the container is handled, if it is normal cargo and deliver within the country, it’s usually between free and 10,000,000VND (~430usd) per container, if it is being delivered to another country, then it’s the huge amount of 100,000,000VND (~43000USD). This huge amount probably originated in situations where the containers were delivered to another country and never came back.
Repair cost
Another matter is the repair cost, it will be subtracted from the deposit in case there are any damages, so it is mandatory to have the container photos from the shipper when they pickup, if there’s proof that the damage exists before pickup the container, then the repair cost will be waived.
